Hairspray (1988)

Directed by John Waters, Hairspray (1988) is a cult classic musical comedy set in 1962 Baltimore. The film follows Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake), a "pleasantly plump" teenager who pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV program, The Corny Collins Show. Along the way, Tracy uses her newfound fame to fight for the racial integration of the show, challenging the social norms of the era.

The film is celebrated for its campy humor, 60s nostalgia, and the legendary performance of Divine as Tracy's mother, Edna Turnblad. Unlike the later 2007 musical adaptation, the original film is noted for its gritty, authentic Baltimore charm.

Locations

John Waters, a Baltimore native, insisted on filming in his hometown to capture the specific aesthetic of the city’s neighborhoods and landmarks.

Patterson High School, Baltimore

The exterior and interior school scenes were filmed at the original Patterson High School on Kane Street. The school’s hallways and classrooms provided the authentic 1960s atmosphere where Tracy and her best friend Penny Pingleton (Leslie Ann Powers) deal with detention and teenage drama. Map Location

WJZ-TV Studios, Baltimore

The fictional Corny Collins Show was filmed at the real WJZ-TV studios on Television Hill. While the show in the movie was based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show, using a functioning Baltimore television station added a layer of realism to the production. Map Location

Highlandtown, Baltimore

The Turnblad family residence and the surrounding neighborhood scenes were filmed in Highlandtown, a working-class neighborhood in Southeast Baltimore. The rows of brick houses and white marble steps are iconic staples of Baltimore architecture that Waters frequently featured in his films. Map Location

Dizzyland Amusement Park (Glen Echo Park), Maryland

The "Tilted Acres" amusement park scenes, where a protest for integration occurs, were actually filmed at Glen Echo Park in Maryland. The park's historic Spanish Ballroom and carousel provided a colorful, vintage backdrop for the film's climactic social confrontations. Map Location

Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School

Additional interior scenes, specifically the "special ed" classroom where Tracy meets Seaweed, were filmed at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School (often called "Mervo"). This location helped ground the film's themes of social and academic segregation. Map Location
