Directed by Curtis Hanson and co-written by Hanson and Brian Helgeland, L.A. Confidential (1997) is a neo-noir crime masterpiece based on the 1990 novel by James Ellroy. Set in the early 1950s, the film explores the intersection of police corruption and Hollywood celebrity. The story centers on three very different LAPD officers: the straight-laced Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), the brutal Bud White (Russell Crowe), and the celebrity-obsessed Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey).
Following a multiple murder at the Nite Owl coffee shop, the three detectives find themselves embroiled in a sprawling web of conspiracy, organized crime, and systemic corruption. As they dig deeper, they discover that the glitzy "image" of Los Angeles hides a dark subculture of heroin trafficking, prostitution, and institutional rot, forcing the unlikely trio to join forces to uncover the truth behind the badge.
