Directed by Fritz Lang and written by Thea von Harbou and Fritz Lang, M (1931) is a seminal masterpiece of German Expressionist cinema and one of the first great sound films. The story follows the frantic hunt for a serial killer (Peter Lorre, in his breakout role) who is preying on children in Berlin. As the police launch an unprecedented crackdown that disrupts the city’s criminal underworld, the local crime syndicates decide to take the law into their own hands to stop the killer themselves.
The film is renowned for its innovative use of sound—most famously the killer's whistling of "In the Hall of the Mountain King"—and its complex exploration of justice, madness, and mob mentality. It remains a foundational work of the psychological thriller and police procedural genres.

M 1931 was filmed in Berlin during the final years of the Weimar Republic. While much of the film was shot on elaborate sets designed by Emil Hasler to capture the claustrophobic atmosphere of the city, several real-world locations and studio backlots were utilized.
