Appearance
Jeepers Creepers
Directed by Victor Salva and executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola, Jeepers Creepers (2001) is a modern cult classic in the horror genre. The film follows siblings Trish (Gina Philips) and Darry Jenner (Justin Long) as they drive home across the desolate countryside for spring break. Their journey turns into a nightmare when they are terrorized by a mysterious driver in a rusted-out truck, leading them to discover a subterranean cavern filled with macabre trophies. They soon realize they are being hunted by an ancient, flesh-eating creature known as "The Creeper."
The film is noted for its suspenseful first half, the iconic design of its villain, and its bleak, uncompromising ending.
Locations
The production was filmed on location in Central Florida, utilizing the flat, rural landscapes and moss-draped trees of the "Old Florida" interior to create an atmosphere of isolation.
Ocala, Florida
The majority of the film's rural road sequences were shot in and around Ocala. The production utilized the long, straight stretches of highway surrounded by dense woods and farmland to establish the feeling of being miles from help. Many of the driving scenes were captured on County Road 329. Map Location
St. James Church, Ocala
The "Church of the Pipe"—where the siblings spot the Creeper dumping a body and where Darry eventually discovers the "House of Pain"—was the Old St. James Episcopal Church in Ocala. While the church itself was used for exterior shots, the basement and the terrifying "sewer pipe" were sets constructed for the film. The church no longer exist, because it burned down. Map Location
Reddick, Florida
The high-speed pursuit and several of the encounters with the Creeper's truck were filmed in the small town of Reddick, north of Ocala. The local backroads provided the perfect, desolate backdrop for the film's early, grounded suspense. Map Location
Lake Panasoffkee, Florida
The "Cat Lady's" house, where the siblings stop to call for help and have a terrifying encounter with the Creeper in the yard, was located near Lake Panasoffkee. The area's swamps and heavy foliage added to the film's swampy, southern gothic aesthetic. Map Location
Dunnellon, Florida
The police station climax, where the Creeper lays siege to the local precinct to get to the Jenner siblings, was filmed in Dunnellon. The production used an old building in the town to serve as the local headquarters for the ill-fated deputies. Map Location
