Judy

Directed by Rupert Goold, Judy (2019) is a poignant biographical drama chronicling the final months of show business legend Judy Garland. Renée Zellweger delivers an Academy Award-winning performance as Garland, who, in the winter of 1968, arrives in London to perform a sell-out run at the Talk of the Town nightclub. Battling exhaustion, health issues, and a longing for her children back in America, the film captures both her fragile mental state and her enduring vocal power.

The film masterfully weaves together her grueling time in London with flashbacks to her youth as a contract player at MGM under the watchful, controlling eye of Louis B. Mayer.

Locations

While the film is set in both Old Hollywood and 1960s London, the production was filmed almost entirely in and around London, utilizing historic theaters and heritage sites to recreate the era.

The Talk of the Town (The Hippodrome), London

The real "Talk of the Town" was located at the Hippodrome in Leicester Square. For the film, the production utilized the Hackney Empire, a grand Edwardian variety theater in East London. Its ornate gold leafing and red velvet seating perfectly captured the atmosphere of Garland's legendary final residency. Map Location

West London Film Studios

The interior sets for the MGM studios of the 1930s—including the yellow brick road and the offices where a young Judy is pressured by studio executives—were meticulously reconstructed at West London Film Studios. These sets highlighted the claustrophobic and artificial nature of her childhood. Map Location

The Savoy Hotel, London

The film depicts Judy staying at the world-famous Savoy Hotel during her London run. The production filmed exterior shots and utilized period-accurate locations to represent the luxury (and eventual isolation) of her suite, where she spent many of her restless nights. Map Location

Primrose Hill, London

The scenes where Judy and her husband Mickey Deans (Finn Wittrock) walk through London, enjoying a brief moment of normalcy and romance, were filmed in the Primrose Hill area. The neighborhood's Victorian architecture and elevated views provided a scenic, peaceful contrast to the harsh lights of the stage. Map Location

Mildmay Club, Stoke Newington

The interior of the more intimate, low-key bars and social clubs where Judy interacts with her fans were filmed at the Mildmay Club. This historic working men's club retained its authentic mid-century interior, requiring very little dressing to fit the 1968 setting. Map Location
