Johnny Mnemonic

Directed by artist Robert Longo and based on the short story by William Gibson, Johnny Mnemonic (1995) is a seminal cyberpunk thriller. Set in the "futuristic" year of 2021, the film stars Keanu Reeves as Johnny, a "mnemonic courier" who has replaced his childhood memories with a high-capacity storage device in his brain. Carrying a massive data upload that exceeds his safety limits, Johnny must deliver the information before he dies from "synaptic leakage," all while being hunted by Yakuza assassins and a fanatical street preacher (Dolph Lundgren).

The film is a cult favorite for its lo-fi 90s vision of the internet, its industrial aesthetic, and its exploration of corporate overreach and technophobia.

Locations

Although set in Newark and Beijing, the film was shot almost entirely in Canada, primarily utilizing the industrial landscapes and historic architecture of Montreal and Toronto.

The Lo-Tek Bridge, Montreal

The iconic "Free City" stronghold of the Lo-Teks was filmed on the Jacques Cartier Bridge and within the industrial structures of the Port of Montreal. The production utilized the massive steel beams and derelict piers to create a sprawling, junk-tech shantytown. Map Location

Union Station, Toronto

The grand "Beijing" hotel where Johnny begins his mission and undergoes the massive data upload was filmed at Union Station in Toronto. The Beaux-Arts architecture and vast Great Hall provided a sense of international scale and corporate opulence. Map Location

Place des Arts, Montreal

The sleek, high-tech interiors of the Pharmakom corporate headquarters were filmed at Place des Arts in Montreal. The building's modernist lines and concrete surfaces perfectly captured the cold, sterile environment of the film's antagonists. Map Location

The Hearn Generating Station, Toronto

The climactic battle scenes and the interior of the Lo-Tek base were filmed inside the Richard L. Hearn Generating Station. This decommissioned power plant, with its towering ceilings and rusted machinery, provided an authentic industrial backdrop for the "Newark" underworld. Map Location

Rue Saint-Jacques, Montreal

The street-level chases through the rain-slicked, neon-lit "Free City" were filmed along Rue Saint-Jacques in Old Montreal. The narrow streets and historic stone buildings were dressed with futuristic props to create a dark, dystopian atmosphere. Map Location
