Project Hail Mary
Based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), the sole survivor of a desperate, last-chance mission to save humanity and the Earth from a solar-dimming catastrophe. Awakening with amnesia on a starship, he must use his scientific wits to piece together his past and complete his mission, eventually discovering he isn't the only one in the galaxy looking for a solution.
The film, directed by the duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is highly anticipated for its blend of hard science, isolation-driven drama, and ground-breaking visual effects used to bring interstellar travel to life.
Locations
While much of the film takes place in the sterile, high-tech environment of the Hail Mary spacecraft (constructed on specialized soundstages), the production utilized diverse international locations to depict Earth’s global response to the "Astrophage" crisis.
Shepperton Studios, United Kingdom
The vast majority of the "space" sequences were filmed at Shepperton Studios. This included the rotating centrifuge of the Hail Mary and the intricate, multi-level laboratory where Ryland Grace performs his experiments. The production utilized state-of-the-art LED volume technology (similar to The Mandalorian) to simulate the shifting light of foreign stars. Map Location
The Hemel Hempstead School, Heath Lane, Hemel Hempstead
At Grover Cleveland Middle School, science teacher Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling) delivers the bulk of the exposition regarding the "Petrova Line" and its threat to the sun. This location—where Grace is eventually recruited by Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) to join a global research team—was filmed at The Hemel Hempstead School on Heath Lane in Hertfordshire. Map Location
The Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory
The Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory at Lord’s Bridge serves as the primary filming location for the global space establishment tasked with saving the sun. Situated on the A603 just south of Cambridge, this site—originally a former ordnance storage facility—now provides the high-tech, scientific backdrop for the project's headquarters. Map Location
Canary Islands, Spain
The volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands served as the backdrop for several Earth-based flashbacks and scientific outposts. The stark, blackened earth and unique geological formations provided a visually striking setting for the international task force's primary research facilities. Map Location
San Francisco, California
Flashback sequences depicting Ryland Grace’s life as a middle-school science teacher were filmed on location in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city's hilly streets and academic atmosphere ground the character's journey before he is thrust into the cosmic unknown. Map Location
Guangzhou, China
To showcase the global scale of the project, several exterior sequences were filmed in Guangzhou. The city's futuristic skyline and the iconic Canton Tower represent the Eastern hub of the international effort to build the starship. Map Location
FAQ
Who plays Rocky?
In a standout performance that has garnered significant buzz, James Ortiz provides the voice and puppetry for the alien, Rocky. The production used a physical puppet on set to help Gosling interact naturally with the character, rather than relying solely on CGI.
Is the ending the same as the book? (Minor Spoilers)
Yes, the film remains largely faithful to the novel's conclusion. It follows Ryland Grace’s decision to save Rocky’s home planet, Erid, rather than returning to Earth, eventually showing him living in a specialized dome on Erid and teaching science to young Eridians.
What is the "Petrova Line"?
It is a concentrated arc of Astrophage (microscopic organisms) traveling between the Sun and Venus. This migration is what drains the Sun’s energy, leading to the global cooling crisis that triggers Project Hail Mary.
How does Ryland talk to Rocky?
The film uses a "machine translation" interface. Since Rocky speaks in musical chords and has no eyes, Ryland develops a software program that translates Rocky’s melodic language into English text on his computer screen.
