Appearance
Rushmore
Directed by Wes Anderson and co-written by Anderson and Owen Wilson, Rushmore (1998) is a landmark of American independent cinema that helped define the director's signature quirky, symmetrical aesthetic. Jason Schwartzman makes his film debut as Max Fischer, an eccentric 15-year-old student at the prestigious Rushmore Academy. While Max is the king of extracurricular activities—ranging from the fencing club to the "Max Fischer Players" theater troupe—he is an academic failure on the verge of expulsion.
The story follows Max's unlikely friendship with disillusioned steel tycoon Herman Blume (Bill Murray) and their mutual obsession with first-grade teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). The resulting love triangle leads to a series of elaborate vengeful schemes, heartbreaks, and an eventual, hard-won maturity.
Locations
Wes Anderson returned to his hometown of Houston, Texas, to film Rushmore, utilizing many of the actual locations from his own youth, including his former school.
St. John's School (Rushmore Academy), Houston
The fictional Rushmore Academy is actually St. John's School, Wes Anderson’s alma mater. The production utilized the school's distinctive stone architecture, the quadrangle, and the library to create the elite, Ivy League atmosphere of Max's beloved school. Map Location
Lamar High School (Grover Cleveland High), Houston
When Max is eventually expelled from Rushmore, he is sent to the local public school, Grover Cleveland High. These scenes were filmed at Lamar High School, located directly across the street from St. John's. The film famously contrasts the "run-down" depiction of Cleveland with the real-life prestige of Lamar. Map Location
Hotel ZaZa (The Warwick Hotel), Houston
After his wife files for divorce, Herman Blume moves into a hotel. These scenes were filmed at the Warwick Hotel (now the Hotel ZaZa) in Houston's Museum District. It is here that Max carries out his revenge by releasing a swarm of bees into Blume's hotel room. Map Location
Doug’s Barber Shop, Houston
Max’s father, Bert Fischer (Seymour Cassel), runs a humble barbershop. The filming location was Doug’s Barber Shop on East 11th Street. The shop's authentic, old-school interior grounded Max's character, revealing his more modest middle-class origins despite his aristocratic pretensions. Map Location
Hollywood Cemetery, Houston
Max’s house, which he claims is part of a large estate but is actually a small home next to a graveyard, is located on Emerald Court. The adjacent cemetery where Max visits his mother’s grave is the Hollywood Cemetery. Map Location
Delmar Stadium, Houston
The parking lot of Delmar Stadium was used for several key scenes, including the kite-flying sequence with Dirk Calloway and Max's meeting with Margaret Yang. The vast, empty asphalt provided a perfectly minimalist backdrop for these character moments. Map Location
