Strange Days

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by James Cameron and Jay Cocks, Strange Days (1995) is a visceral, neo-noir cyberpunk thriller set during the final 48 hours of 1999. Ralph Fiennes stars as Lenny Nero, an ex-cop turned black-market hustler who deals in "SQUID" recordings—digital recordings of memories and sensations captured directly from the human brain. When Lenny receives a recording of a brutal murder, he is pulled into a sprawling conspiracy involving police corruption and racial tension in a dystopian Los Angeles.

The film is renowned for its pioneering first-person "POV" sequences, its gritty atmosphere, and its prophetic exploration of voyeurism, technology, and civil unrest. While a box-office failure upon release, it has since attained cult status as one of the most ambitious science fiction films of the 1990s.

Locations

The production was filmed almost entirely on location in Los Angeles, utilizing the city's urban decay and neon-lit streets to create a sense of pre-millennial tension.

The Westin Bonaventure Hotel, Downtown LA

The iconic Westin Bonaventure Hotel serves as the primary setting for the film’s massive New Year's Eve climax. Its glass elevators and futuristic, cylindrical towers provided the perfect backdrop for the chaotic street party and the final confrontation. The production famously staged a massive celebration with thousands of extras on the streets surrounding the hotel. Map Location

The Regent Theater, Main Street

The exterior of Lenny Nero’s base of operations and several of the seedier street scenes were filmed around the Regent Theater on South Main Street. At the time of filming, this area of the "Historic Core" was significantly more dilapidated, lending the film its authentic, grimy dystopian aesthetic. Map Location

7th Street and Broadway

Many of the film's nighttime "hustling" sequences, where Lenny navigates the crowded, dangerous streets of the future LA, were shot at the intersection of 7th Street and Broadway. The production utilized large amounts of neon signage and practical lighting to transform the area into a chaotic marketplace of the future. Map Location

The Vincent Thomas Bridge, San Pedro

The dramatic opening sequence involving a botched robbery and a chase across a bridge was filmed on the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro. The bridge’s industrial look and green suspension cables make it a favorite for LA-based action films, providing a sense of scale and isolation. Map Location

Santa Monica Pier

A pivotal flashback sequence featuring Lenny and his former flame, Faith (Juliette Lewis), was filmed on the Santa Monica Pier. The bright, nostalgic colors of the amusement park contrast sharply with the dark, rain-slicked reality of Lenny’s present-day life in the film. Map Location

Sunset Boulevard

The "Retinal Fetish" nightclub scenes, where Juliette Lewis performs, were filmed at a converted warehouse space near Sunset Boulevard. The production design for the club emphasized the film's "high-tech, low-life" cyberpunk themes, featuring cages, multiple screens, and industrial decor. Map Location
