The Year My Voice Broke

Written and directed by John Duigan, The Year My Voice Broke (1987) is a poignant and critically acclaimed Australian coming-of-age drama. Set in 1962 in a remote town in New South Wales, the story follows Danny Embling (Noah Taylor), a sensitive and introverted teenager who is deeply in love with his childhood best friend, Freya Olson (Loene Carmen).

As Danny navigates the awkward transition into manhood, he watches painfully as Freya is drawn to the town's rebellious rugby star, Trevor Leishman (Ben Mendelsohn). The film beautifully captures the bittersweet nature of adolescence, rural isolation, and the discovery of dark family secrets. It remains a landmark of Australian cinema, sweeping the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards upon its release and launching the international careers of its young cast.

Location(s)

The film was shot on location in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, perfectly utilizing the stark, undulating landscape to mirror the emotional isolation of its characters.

Braidwood, New South Wales

The historic town of Braidwood served as the fictional town of "Berridale." Its well-preserved 19th-century architecture provided an authentic 1960s backdrop without the need for extensive set building. Many of the shopfronts and streets seen in Danny and Freya's walks remain recognizable today. Map Location

The Big Hole, Deua National Park

A pivotal and atmospheric location in the film is "The Big Hole," a massive natural limestone sinkhole. In the movie, it serves as a place of mystery and danger where the characters retreat to escape the prying eyes of the small-minded town. Map Location

Goulburn, New South Wales

Some additional scenes and logistics were centered in the larger regional hub of Goulburn. The surrounding countryside was used for the expansive, wind-swept shots of the Australian bush that define the film's visual style. Map Location
