The Young Victoria

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée with a screenplay by Julian Fellowes (writer of Gosford Park), The Young Victoria (2009) focuses on the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, casting her as a social reformer and a young woman negotiating extraordinary pressure from all sides. Emily Blunt stars as Victoria, with Rupert Friend as Prince Albert. The film traces the princess's oppressive upbringing under the notorious "Kensington System," her accession to the throne at eighteen, and her growing reliance on — and love for — her German consort.

Produced with Martin Scorsese and Sarah Ferguson (the Duchess of York) as producers, the film won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. It was shot at a number of Britain's most spectacular historic houses and estates.

Location(s)

The Young Victoria was filmed at a series of grand houses across England — in London, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, West Sussex, and Surrey — none of which is the real Kensington Palace or Buckingham Palace.

Ham House, Ham Street, Richmond-upon-Thames, London

The dark, oppressive "Kensington Palace" of Victoria's childhood — where she was brought up under the controlling Kensington System by her mother and the ambitious Sir John Conroy — was filmed at Ham House, a magnificent 1610 mansion on the Thames in Richmond. Now a National Trust property, its chequered marble Great Hall floor is immediately recognizable. The house has also appeared in Never Let Me Go and Joe Wright's Anna Karenina. Map Location

Kensington Palace, Kensington Gardens, London

The real Kensington Palace, set in Kensington Gardens in west London, has been a royal residence since 1689 and serves as a reference point for the film's story, though the interiors seen on screen are from other locations. Map Location

Wilton House, Wilton, Wiltshire

Wilton House, two and a half miles west of Salisbury, was used for key interior sequences. Its spectacular Double Cube Room — a white and gold Inigo Jones interior measuring 30 by 30 by 60 feet — has featured in numerous period productions including Barry Lyndon, Pride & Prejudice (2005), and Sense and Sensibility. Floors Castle, Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland

Several regal exterior and interior sequences were filmed at Floors Castle in the Scottish Borders, the seat of the Duke of Roxburghe, which provided the scale and grandeur required for scenes depicting the early royal court. Map Location
