Appearance
Y Tu Mamá También
Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Y Tu Mamá También (2001) is a coming-of-age road movie and social portrait of Mexico at a pivotal political moment. Two privileged teenage best friends, Julio (Gael García Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna), invite the older, worldly-wise Luisa (Maribel Verdú) on an impromptu road trip to a fictional beach called "Heaven's Mouth." As the journey progresses, their relationships are tested, secrets are revealed, and the Mexico passing by outside their car window — seen through a detached, documentary-style voiceover narration — paints a complex picture of inequality and change.
The film was a major international breakthrough for Cuarón, García Bernal, and Luna, and won the Best Screenplay prize at the Venice Film Festival. It was filmed on location throughout Mexico, with the road trip taking the cast through a range of real Mexican states and landscapes.
Location(s)
Y Tu Mamá También was filmed on location across Mexico, tracing a route from Mexico City through the states of Puebla, Oaxaca, and Guerrero, ending on the Pacific Coast.
Mexico City
The film opens in the middle-class and elite neighborhoods of Mexico City — the world the boys inhabit before the road trip begins. The city's social geography, from wealthy enclaves to crowded market streets glimpsed from car windows, frames the film's political commentary. Map Location
The Road Through Puebla and Oaxaca
The bulk of the road trip sequences were filmed along the Mexican highway network passing through the states of Puebla and Oaxaca, capturing the rural and small-town Mexico invisible to the film's oblivious protagonists. The narration repeatedly draws the viewer's attention to the lives unfolding outside the car windows that the characters themselves fail to notice. Map Location
Pacific Coast of Guerrero
The film's climactic destination — the beautiful, remote beach the characters call "Heaven's Mouth" — was filmed on the Pacific coast of the state of Guerrero, in a stretch of unspoiled coastline that was at the time genuinely off the tourist trail. Map Location
