Appearance
Year of the Dragon
Co-written and directed by Michael Cimino, with a screenplay by Oliver Stone based on Robert Daley's 1981 novel, Year of the Dragon (1985) is a crime thriller set in New York's Chinatown. Mickey Rourke stars as Stanley White, a decorated Vietnam veteran turned obsessive NYPD police captain who declares war on the Chinatown Triad underworld, personified by the young and ruthless Joey Tai (John Lone). The film is Cimino's first since the costly failure of Heaven's Gate (1980), and it attracted significant controversy for its portrayal of Chinese Americans.
Rather than filming on location in Manhattan's Chinatown — which would have been prohibitively expensive — Cimino built a full-scale recreation of the neighborhood on the backlot of Dino De Laurentiis's studios in Wilmington, North Carolina, a set that was subsequently reused extensively by other productions.
Location(s)
Year of the Dragon was filmed primarily at De Laurentiis Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina, with the elaborate Chinatown backlot set standing in for Manhattan throughout the film. Additional sequences were shot on location in Southeast Asia.
De Laurentiis Studios (now CineStudios), Wilmington, North Carolina
The vast majority of the film's New York Chinatown scenes were filmed on a purpose-built, full-scale backlot recreation constructed on the grounds of Dino De Laurentiis's studio complex in Wilmington, North Carolina. The studio conducted exhaustive research into the real neighborhood before constructing its replica. The same backlot was subsequently used by many other productions. Map Location
Southeast Asia Location Sequences
Several scenes depicting events in Thailand and other Southeast Asian settings were filmed on location in the region, providing authenticity for the film's sequences involving the international drug trade.
