The Eagle

Directed by Kevin Macdonald and adapted from Rosemary Sutcliff's novel The Eagle of the Ninth, The Eagle (2011) is a historical adventure set in 2nd-century Roman Britain. Channing Tatum stars as Marcus Aquila, a young Roman centurion who arrives in Britain to restore his father's honor by recovering the lost golden Eagle standard of the Ninth Legion, which vanished twenty years prior in the wilds of Caledonia.

Accompanied by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus ventures north of Hadrian's Wall into uncharted territory. The film is noted for its gritty, realistic depiction of Roman military life and the tribal cultures of ancient Scotland, exploring themes of loyalty, honor, and the complex relationship between conqueror and conquered.

Locations

The production used Hungary to stand in for Roman-occupied Southern Britain, while the sequences set "North of the Wall" were filmed on location in the rugged Scottish Highlands.

Petneházy Meadow near Budapest, Hungary

The Roman garrison of 'Isca Dumnoniorum,' where Marcus takes his first command and survives a brutal opening siege, was a fully functioning fort built in the countryside northwest of Budapest. Map Location

Lake Velence, Hungary

The quiet villa of Marcus's Uncle Aquila (Donald Sutherland) was constructed on the banks of Lake Velence. The production built a formal Roman garden and a small provincial wooden Coliseum nearby, where Marcus famously saves Esca's life during a gladiatorial bout. Map Location

Finnich Glen (The Devil's Pulpit), Scotland

The dramatic, steep-walled gorge where the survivors of the Ninth Legion face the fearsome Seal People is Finnich Glen, south of Drymen. The production had to winch heavy camera and lighting equipment 80 feet down into the moss-covered ravine to capture the scene. Map Location

Polbain, Wester Ross, Scotland

The village of the "Seal People" was built half a mile up the hill of Meall an Fheadain, overlooking the Summer Isles. The location provided a desolate, majestic atmosphere for the film's climactic confrontation. Map Location
