Appearance
I Love You, Man
Directed by John Hamburg, I Love You, Man (2009) is a quintessential "bromantic" comedy starring Paul Rudd as Peter Klaven, a real estate agent who realizes he has no male friends to serve as the best man for his upcoming wedding. After a series of disastrous "man-dates," he meets the eccentric and free-spirited Sydney Fife (Jason Segel). The film follows their blossoming friendship as Sydney helps Peter find his inner "bro," leading to both hilarious and heartfelt consequences for Peter's relationship with his fiancée, Zooey (Rashida Jones).
The film is celebrated for its awkward humor, the chemistry between Rudd and Segel, and for popularizing the phrase "Slappin' da bass."
Locations
The film is a love letter to Los Angeles and its beach communities, capturing a mix of high-end real estate and relaxed, coastal hangouts.
Lou's On The Beach, Venice
The outdoor restaurant where Peter and Sydney have their first successful "man-date"—and where Peter eventually attempts to "slap da bass"—was filmed at James' Beach in Venice. The location is a local landmark and served as the perfect backdrop for their deepening friendship over fish tacos. Map Location
Sydney’s House, Venice
Sydney’s ultimate "man cave" house, located just off the Venice boardwalk, is situated on Ocean Front Walk near Westminster Avenue. The garage where the duo jams to Rush and where Sydney stores his eccentric collection of items is a real residential structure in the heart of Venice Beach. Map Location
The Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood
A pivotal scene where Peter and Sydney attend a Rush concert was filmed at the iconic Hollywood Bowl. The production captured the scale of the legendary venue, and the band members of Rush (Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart) appeared as themselves, performing "Limelight." Map Location
Hy’s Steakhouse, Century City
The scene where Peter takes Sydney to dinner and Sydney causes a scene by confronting a "jerk" at the bar was filmed at Hy’s Steakhouse (now permanently closed) in Century City. Its upscale, dark-wood interior provided the contrast needed for Sydney’s disruptive, laid-back personality.
