I, Robot

Directed by Alex Proyas and suggested by the short stories of Isaac Asimov, I, Robot (2004) is a high-concept sci-fi action thriller set in a futuristic Chicago of 2035. Will Smith stars as Detective Del Spooner, a man who harbors a deep-seated distrust of robots in a society where they are ubiquitous. When Dr. Alfred Lanning, the co-founder of U.S. Robotics, dies in an apparent suicide, Spooner suspects a "unique" robot named Sonny may be responsible, leading him to uncover a conspiracy that threatens the Three Laws of Robotics and humanity itself.

The film is recognized for its groundbreaking visual effects, its sleek "Apple-esque" futuristic design, and its exploration of artificial intelligence and consciousness.

Locations

Although the film is set in Chicago, the majority of the production was filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, utilizing its modern glass-and-steel architecture to portray the city of the future.

U.S. Robotics Headquarters (The Oval), Vancouver

The sleek, massive headquarters of U.S. Robotics was partially inspired by and filmed at The Oval (Richmond Olympic Oval area) and the surrounding modern architecture in Vancouver. The production used heavy CGI to extend the buildings into the towering structures seen in the film, but the clean lines of British Columbia's modern developments provided the base. Map Location

Burrard Bridge, Vancouver

The high-speed tunnel chase where Spooner is attacked by a swarm of NS-5 robots was inspired by and filmed using plates from the Burrard Bridge and various Vancouver tunnel systems. The art deco architecture of the bridge provided a "retro-future" feel that Director Alex Proyas wanted for the 2035 aesthetic. Map Location

BC Place, Vancouver

The area around BC Place was used for several exterior street scenes. The stadium's futuristic appearance at the time, combined with digital set extensions, helped create the bustling, multi-layered streets of future Chicago. Map Location

New Westminster, British Columbia

The older, grittier parts of Chicago where Spooner lives were filmed in New Westminster. The production chose this area for its brick buildings and traditional "Main Street" feel to contrast with the sterile, high-tech world of U.S. Robotics. Map Location

Vancouver House / Surrey City Hall

Interiors for the police station and various corporate offices were filmed in modern civic buildings such as the Surrey City Hall and the Simon Fraser University campus. These locations provided the glass-walled, open-concept interiors that defined the film's look.
