A Knight's Tale
Written, produced, and directed by Brian Helgeland, A Knight's Tale (2001) is a unique, anachronistic blend of medieval action and modern rock-and-roll sensibility. The film stars Heath Ledger as William Thatcher, a peasant squire who breaks all social laws by posing as a knight to compete in the noble sport of jousting. Accompanied by his loyal friends and a young, struggling Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany), William sets out to "change his stars" while contending with the villainous Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) and winning the heart of the noble Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon).

Locations
Although the story journeys through 14th-century France and England, the entire production was filmed in the Czech Republic, utilizing historic sites and massive sets built at Barrandov Studios to recreate medieval Europe.

The heart of the production was Barrandov Studios, where massive outdoor sets were constructed. The production built a sprawling replica of medieval London, including the London Bridge and the streets surrounding the jousting arena. The stunning Křivoklát Castle, one of the oldest and most important royal castles in the Czech Republic, served as a primary location for the film’s various noble courts and interior castle scenes. Several street scenes and atmospheric transitions were filmed in the Old Town (Staré Město) area of Prague. The city's preserved medieval and Baroque architecture allowed the production to film on real cobblestone streets that required very little modification to stand in for 14th-century Rouen and Paris.
