A Knight's Tale

Written, produced, and directed by Brian Helgeland, A Knight's Tale (2001) is a unique, anachronistic blend of medieval action and modern rock-and-roll sensibility. The film stars Heath Ledger as William Thatcher, a peasant squire who breaks all social laws by posing as a knight to compete in the noble sport of jousting. Accompanied by his loyal friends and a young, struggling Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany), William sets out to "change his stars" while contending with the villainous Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) and winning the heart of the noble Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon).

The film is beloved for its high-energy jousting sequences, its use of classic rock anthems like Queen's "We Will Rock You," and its heartfelt message about self-determination.

Locations

Although the story journeys through 14th-century France and England, the entire production was filmed in the Czech Republic, utilizing historic sites and massive sets built at Barrandov Studios to recreate medieval Europe.

Barrandov Studios, Prague

The heart of the production was Barrandov Studios, where massive outdoor sets were constructed. The production built a sprawling replica of medieval London, including the London Bridge and the streets surrounding the jousting arena. These sets were so detailed that they were reused by several other historical productions after filming concluded. Map Location

Křivoklát Castle, Czech Republic

The stunning Křivoklát Castle, one of the oldest and most important royal castles in the Czech Republic, served as a primary location for the film’s various noble courts and interior castle scenes. Its authentic Gothic architecture provided the perfect backdrop for the high-society world that William Thatcher attempts to infiltrate. Map Location

Old Town, Prague

Several street scenes and atmospheric transitions were filmed in the Old Town (Staré Město) area of Prague. The city's preserved medieval and Baroque architecture allowed the production to film on real cobblestone streets that required very little modification to stand in for 14th-century Rouen and Paris. Cathedral of St. Vitus, Prague

The majestic St. Vitus Cathedral, located within the Prague Castle complex, was used for establishing shots and scenes requiring grand ecclesiastical architecture. Its soaring spires and intricate stone carvings helped establish the visual scale of the film's European setting. Map Location

Průhonice Park, Czech Republic

The lush, pastoral landscapes seen during the group's travels between tournaments were filmed in Průhonice Park, just outside of Prague. The park’s expansive grounds and lakes provided the scenic, rolling countryside that William and his entourage traverse on their way to glory. Map Location
