Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Directed by Karan Johar in his directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) is a definitive blockbuster of modern Indian cinema. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul, Kajol as the tomboyish Anjali, and Rani Mukerji as the sophisticated Tina. The plot follows a classic "love is friendship" theme, split between a vibrant college-day flashback and a second half where Rahul's young daughter, Anjali, attempts to reunite her widowed father with his long-lost best friend.

The film is legendary for its soundtrack, its influence on 90s Indian fashion (specifically the "GAP" hoodies and "Cool" necklaces), and for solidifying the iconic on-screen pairing of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Locations

While the film is set in India, Karan Johar utilized stunning international locations—particularly in Scotland—to give the musical numbers a grand, "larger-than-life" feel characteristic of Dharma Productions.

St. Xavier's College, Mumbai

The "St. Stephens" college where the first half of the film takes place utilized the campus of St. Xavier's College in Mumbai for many of its exterior shots. The Gothic architecture provided the prestigious, upscale feel for the characters' academic setting. Map Location

Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland

One of the most recognizable scenes in the title song, "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai," features the actors in front of the Eilean Donan Castle. This historic highland castle served as the romantic backdrop for the film's most famous dream sequence. Map Location

Glencoe, Scotland

The sweeping green valleys and misty mountains seen during the musical sequences were filmed in Glencoe. The natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands was used to create the dreamlike, ethereal quality of the film's romantic songs. Map Location

Inchmahome Priory, Scotland

The ruins seen during the song "Tumhi Dekho Na" (and parts of the title track) are the Inchmahome Priory, located on an island in the Lake of Menteith. The ancient stone arches provided a dramatic, timeless contrast to the vibrant costumes of the lead actors. Map Location

Ooty, Tamil Nadu

The summer camp where the second half of the film is set was filmed in the hill station of Ooty. The "Shimla" summer camp scenes, including the reunion of Rahul and Anjali, utilized the lush forests and colonial-era cottages of this South Indian retreat. Map Location

Film City, Mumbai

The majority of the lavish interior sets, including the grand basketball court and the characters' high-end apartments, were built at Film City in Mumbai. These sets were pivotal in establishing the "cool" and aspirational lifestyle depicted in the movie. Map Location
