Kes

Directed by Ken Loach, Kes (1969) is a masterpiece of British social realism and one of the most beloved films in UK cinema history. Based on Barry Hines' novel A Kestrel for a Knave, the film follows Billy Casper (David Bradley), a bullied and neglected teenager growing up in a tough Yorkshire mining town. Billy’s life is transformed when he finds and trains a kestrel, which he names Kes. Through the bird, Billy finds a sense of purpose and freedom that is absent from his bleak school life and his difficult relationship with his brother, Jud.

The film is renowned for its authentic use of local dialect, its critique of the British education system, and its heartbreakingly naturalistic performances.

Locations

To maintain the film's documentary-like feel, the production was filmed almost entirely on location in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, often using non-professional actors from the local area.

Edward Sheerien School, Barnsley

The school scenes, including the famous football match led by the PE teacher Mr. Sugden (Brian Glover) and the assembly sequences, were filmed at the Edward Sheerien School (now demolished and replaced by St. Helen's Academy). The school served as a stark symbol of the rigid and often indifferent institutional environment of the 1960s. Map Location

Hoyland Common, Barnsley

The terraced house where Billy lives with his mother and brother is located in Hoyland Common, specifically around the Park Street area. These streets provided the gritty, industrial backdrop that defined Billy's daily life and his struggles to escape his environment. Map Location

Skiers Spring Wood, Hoyland

The woods where Billy finds the kestrel and spends his time training the bird were filmed at Skiers Spring Wood. This location provided the lush, natural contrast to the grey coal-mining landscape of the town, representing Billy's private world of peace and connection. Map Location

Barnsley Town Centre

Various scenes of Billy running errands, including visiting the newsagents and the library where he steals a book on falconry, were filmed in the heart of Barnsley. Many of the shopfronts and streets seen in the film have since been modernized, but the general layout of the town remains recognizable. Map Location

Casper’s Allotment, Hoyland

The allotment gardens where Billy hides and spends time away from his brother were located near the Hoyland Common area. These small plots of land were a staple of working-class life in northern England and added to the film's deep sense of place. Map Location
