Klute

Directed by Alan J. Pakula, Klute (1971) is a seminal neo-noir thriller and the first installment in Pakula's "Paranoia Trilogy." Jane Fonda stars in an Academy Award-winning performance as Bree Daniels, a high-class New York City call girl and aspiring actress who becomes the focus of an investigation into the disappearance of a businessman. Donald Sutherland plays John Klute, a reserved detective from Pennsylvania who travels to the city to find his friend, eventually forming a complex and protective bond with Bree.

The film is celebrated for its masterful cinematography by Gordon Willis, its exploration of urban alienation, and its feminist undertones, portraying Bree as a woman struggling for agency within a voyeuristic and dangerous world.

Locations

The production was filmed extensively on location in New York City, capturing the grit, shadows, and industrial decay of Manhattan in the early 1970s.

Bree’s Apartment, Upper West Side

Bree Daniels’ skylit apartment, which serves as the emotional and claustrophobic heart of the film, was located at 441 West End Avenue at 81st Street. The production used the real interiors to emphasize the feeling of Bree being watched from the surrounding rooftops. Map Location

The Garment District, Manhattan

The disappearance at the center of the film is linked to the industrial lofts of the Garment District. Several scenes featuring Klute’s investigation and the menacing presence of the killer were filmed in the warehouses and side streets between 6th and 9th Avenues. Map Location

St. James Theatre, Manhattan

Bree’s aspirations as an actress are highlighted during a tense audition scene filmed at the St. James Theatre on West 44th Street. The cavernous, empty theater emphasizes Bree’s vulnerability and the coldness of the industry she seeks to join. Map Location

West Side Highway & Piers

The film utilizes the then-dilapidated West Side Highway and the crumbling piers of the Hudson River for several of the movie's more atmospheric and suspenseful sequences. These locations provided the "urban jungle" aesthetic that defined the film's visual language. Map Location
