Appearance
The Queen
Directed by Stephen Frears and written by Peter Morgan, The Queen (2006) is an intimate behind-the-scenes glimpse at the British Royal Family in the immediate aftermath of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. The film focuses on the contrasting perspectives of Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) and the newly elected Prime Minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen).
As the public’s grief turns to anger over the Royal Family's perceived coldness and silence, Blair must navigate the delicate task of convincing the Queen to break with tradition and make a public statement. Helen Mirren’s nuanced, Academy Award-winning performance captures the struggle of a monarch caught between a lifelong commitment to stoicism and the demands of a modern, changing world.
Location(s)
The Queen was filmed across various locations in Scotland and England to recreate the grandeur of the royal residences, as the production was not permitted to film inside the actual palaces.
Balmoral Castle (Castle Fraser & Glenfeshie Estate)
While the real Balmoral is the private estate of the monarch, the film used Castle Fraser in Aberdeenshire for exterior shots and the ruggedly beautiful Glenfeshie Estate in the Cairngorms for the sprawling Highland landscapes where the Queen famously encounters a stag. Map Location
Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire
This grand neoclassical country house was used to represent the interiors of several royal residences. Its ornate staterooms provided the necessary scale and historical detail to double for the private quarters of the Queen and Prince Philip. Map Location
Culrain Station, Scottish Highlands
The small, remote railway station where the Queen arrives in Scotland is the actual Culrain station. The location emphasizes the isolation of the royal retreat during a time of immense national turmoil. Map Location
