Unbreakable

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Unbreakable (2000) is a superhero origin story told in the muted, deliberate register of a character drama. Bruce Willis stars as David Dunn, a security guard who is the sole survivor — and entirely unharmed — after a catastrophic train wreck. He is drawn into the orbit of Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), a man with a rare bone disease who has devoted his life to comic books and now believes that David may be something extraordinary. The film was Shyamalan's follow-up to The Sixth Sense (1999).

Shot entirely on location in and around Philadelphia, Unbreakable uses the city's distinctive architecture — grand civic spaces, historic churches, and elegant lobbies — as a quietly mythological backdrop for its story.

Curtis Center Lobby, 601-645 Walnut Street, Philadelphia

The elegant restaurant where David and his wife Audrey (Robin Wright Penn) share a cocktail is not a bar at all, but the spectacular lobby of the Curtis Center at Walnut Street and Sixth Street. Its centrepiece is The Dream Garden, a stunning 1916 Tiffany glass mosaic based on a painting by Maxfield Parrish, which narrowly escaped being shipped to Las Vegas in 1998.
