Appearance
Unforgiven
Written by David Webb Peoples and directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven (1992) is a revisionist Western masterpiece and one of the defining films of Eastwood's career. Eastwood plays William Munny, a retired outlaw and widower who takes on one last job — assassinating two cowboys who disfigured a prostitute in the frontier town of Big Whiskey, Wyoming — against the wishes of the town's brutal, badge-wearing autocrat, Sheriff "Little Bill" Daggett (Gene Hackman). Morgan Freeman co-stars as Munny's old partner Ned Logan, and Richard Harris appears as the flamboyant English Bob.
The film won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, and remains the last Western to win Best Picture. It was filmed primarily in Alberta, Canada, standing in for Wyoming.
Location(s)
Unforgiven was filmed in and around Longview and High River, Alberta, Canada, with the fictional town of Big Whiskey, Wyoming recreated on location in the Canadian foothills.
Longview, Alberta, Canada
The town of "Big Whiskey" was constructed and filmed in and around the small ranching community of Longview, Alberta, in the foothills southwest of Calgary. The town's dirt streets, wooden saloons, and open prairie surroundings provided the authentic period Western atmosphere Eastwood required without any of the anachronisms that bedevil modern-day filming in the American West.
