Union Pacific

Produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille, Union Pacific (1939) is an epic Western drama about the construction of America's first transcontinental railroad after President Lincoln's authorisation in 1862. Barbara Stanwyck stars as Mollie Monahan, the spirited Irish postmistress of the railroad's end-of-track town, caught in a love triangle between Union Pacific troubleshooter Jeff Butler (Joel McCrea) and his charming but corrupt old friend Dick Allen (Robert Preston). Brian Donlevy plays the hired agent of a crooked financier trying to sabotage the project.

DeMille was incapacitated during production and much of the film was directed from a stretcher, with directors Arthur Rosson and James Hogan assisting. The film's world premiere in Omaha, Nebraska — a four-day event drawing 250,000 people — was one of the largest in Hollywood history. Parts of the film were shot in Iron Springs, Utah, using Navajo extras for the dramatic Indian attack sequence.

Location(s)

Union Pacific was filmed at Paramount's studios and on location in southern Utah, with the spectacular western landscapes providing the backdrop for the railroad construction sequences.

Iron Springs, Utah

Parts of the film's outdoor railroad and frontier sequences were shot in Iron Springs, Utah, in the southwestern part of the state. The surrounding desert and canyon country provided the wide-open spaces DeMille required for the epic scale of the transcontinental railroad story. Map Location

Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California

Interior scenes and much of the train-carriage material were filmed at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, where the production's more controlled technical requirements — including back-projection shots of passing landscapes — could be accommodated. Map Location
