Appearance
Babe
Directed by Chris Noonan and produced by George Miller, Babe (1995) is a beloved animal fantasy film adapted from Dick King-Smith's 1983 novel The Sheep-Pig. The story follows a shy Yorkshire piglet named Babe who is won at a county fair by Farmer Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell). Narrowly escaping a fate as Christmas dinner, Babe is adopted by a motherly border collie named Fly and discovers he has a unique talent for herding sheep.
The film follows Babe's heartwarming journey as he defies the rigid social hierarchy of the farm to become a "sheep-pig". A massive critical and commercial success, Babe was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is celebrated for its groundbreaking visual effects and its themes of kindness and perseverance.
Locations
While the story is set in the rural English countryside, the film was shot entirely on location in New South Wales, Australia, where the production team recreated a lush, green version of Britain.
Robertson, New South Wales
The village of Robertson, known as the "green heart" of the Southern Highlands, served as the primary filming location. "Hoggett’s Farm" was a meticulously detailed set built in the rolling countryside along the Illawara Highway, though it was removed after the production concluded. Map Location
Fountaindale Road in Robertson
The road leading to the fictional farm and several surrounding countryside scenes were filmed along Fountaindale Road. Visitors can still see the impressive Fountaindale Grand Manor nearby, which is located on the same street where the farm set once stood. Map Location
Exeter Village Hall
The interior and exterior scenes for the local fair and various community gatherings were filmed in the neighboring village of Exeter, particularly at the Exeter Village Hall, which captured the quaint, communal atmosphere of the film's setting. Map Location
FAQ
How many pigs played Babe?
Because piglets grow so quickly, the production used 48 different Large White piglets over the course of filming. Each piglet was on set for about three weeks before they "outgrew" the role. Additionally, one animatronic pig was used for more complex facial expressions.
Is James Cromwell really that tall?
Yes! James Cromwell stands at 6'7". His height actually helped emphasize the gentle giant nature of Farmer Hoggett. Fun fact: Cromwell became a dedicated vegan after working on the film.
