Dad's Army

Directed by Oliver Parker, Dad's Army (2016) is a feature film adaptation of the classic BBC sitcom. Set in 1944 as World War II nears its end, the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, led by Captain Mainwaring (Toby Jones) and Sergeant Wilson (Bill Nighy), suffers from low morale until a glamorous journalist (Catherine Zeta-Jones) arrives to write about them.

As the platoon deals with the distraction of the reporter, MI5 discovers a radio signal sent from Walmington-on-Sea toward Berlin, suggesting a German spy is hiding within the town. The film serves as both a nostalgic tribute to the original series and a lighthearted ensemble comedy.

Locations

The production was filmed almost entirely in the East Riding of Yorkshire, which provided the ideal coastal scenery and historic architecture to represent wartime Britain.

Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire

The historic Old Town of Bridlington was transformed into the fictional "Walmington-on-Sea." Its high street was dressed with 1940s-style shopfronts, sandbags, and vintage vehicles to recreate the atmosphere of the British home front. Map Location

North Landing, Flamborough

The dramatic chalk cliffs and beaches of North Landing served as the site for the Home Guard’s military exercises and coastal patrols. The rugged landscape was perfect for the film’s more action-oriented sequences. Map Location

Beverley Minster

Interior scenes representing church halls and official offices were filmed at Beverley Minster, a stunning Gothic building that added a sense of gravity and history to the comedic proceedings. Map Location
