The Dam Busters

Directed by Michael Anderson, The Dam Busters (1955) is a classic British war film chronicling the true story of Operation Chastise. The film details the work of scientist Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave), who develops the "bouncing bomb," and the elite 617 Squadron, led by Guy Gibson (Richard Todd), who carry out the daring low-level raids on the dams of Germany's Ruhr Valley.

The film is famous for its tension, technical accuracy, and its iconic musical theme. It remains a definitive portrayal of British ingenuity and courage during World War II.

Locations

The production used several locations across the UK that were historically linked to the RAF or provided the necessary topography to simulate the German dams.

Derwent Reservoir, Derbyshire

The practice flights for the film were shot at the Derwent Reservoir, the same location where the real 617 Squadron trained for the mission. The twin towers of the dam are instantly recognizable to fans of the film. Map Location

RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire

Many of the airfield sequences were filmed at RAF Scampton, which was the actual home base of the 617 Squadron during the war. This lent the film a high degree of historical authenticity. Map Location

Lake Windermere, Cumbria

Some of the low-altitude flying sequences over water were filmed at Lake Windermere, where the production could safely capture the dramatic perspective of the Lancasters skimming the surface. Map Location
