Damage

Directed by Louis Malle, Damage (1992) is a psychological drama about obsession and betrayal. Jeremy Irons stars as Stephen Fleming, a prominent British politician who embarks on a reckless and passionate affair with Anna Barton (Juliette Binoche), the fiancée of his son, Martyn.

As the secret relationship intensifies, Fleming risks his career, his family, and his sanity. The film is a somber and intense exploration of the destructive power of desire, based on the novel by Josephine Hart.

Locations

The film is set against the backdrop of upper-class London and the French countryside, emphasizing the contrast between Fleming’s public life and his private obsession.

London, England

Much of the film was shot on location in London, particularly in the affluent neighborhoods of Chelsea and South Kensington. The sterile, elegant interiors of the Fleming family home reflect the repressed emotional state of the characters. Map Location

Villefranche-sur-Mer, France

The tragic climax and several key romantic interludes were filmed on the French Riviera in Villefranche-sur-Mer. The narrow streets and Mediterranean views provide a romantic but ultimately melancholy setting for the story’s conclusion. Map Location

Shepperton Studios

Many of the intimate interior scenes were meticulously recreated on soundstages at Shepperton Studios to allow for director Louis Malle's specific lighting and camera movements. Map Location
