Oblivion

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Karl Gajdusek and Michael deBruyn, Oblivion (2013) is a visually stunning sci-fi epic set in the year 2077. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on a desolate, post-apocalyptic Earth following a brutal war against an alien threat known as "Scavengers." Living in a high-tech "Sky Tower" with his communications partner, Victoria (Andrea Riseborough), Jack’s mission is to extract the planet’s remaining resources before joining the rest of humanity on a colony on Saturn’s moon, Titan.

However, Jack is haunted by fragmented memories of a life in pre-war New York City—memories that shouldn't exist. When he rescues a mysterious stranger named Julia (Olga Kurylenko) from a crashed spacecraft, his reality is shattered. Her arrival triggers a series of revelations that force Jack to question his mission, his identity, and the true nature of the authority he serves, eventually leading him into a desperate fight to save the remnants of the human race.

Location(s)

Oblivion is celebrated for its breathtaking cinematography, which relied heavily on practical locations in Iceland and the United States to create its "daytime" post-apocalyptic aesthetic.

Hrossaborg Crater, Iceland

The ruins of a massive football stadium where Jack is ambushed by Scavengers were filmed at the Hrossaborg crater. The 10,000-year-old natural amphitheater provided the perfect bowl shape for the CGI-enhanced ruins of the stadium. Map Location

June Lake, California

Jack’s secret, idyllic lakeside cabin—a verdant escape from his sterile high-tech life—was built on the shores of June Lake in the Inyo National Forest. The location represents the last "green" part of Earth that Jack has discovered and protected. Map Location

Empire State Building, New York City

The film’s emotional core revolves around the ruins of the Empire State Building. While much of the interior was a set, the production filmed plates on the actual 86th-floor observation deck to ground the dream sequences and the eventual discovery of the ruins in reality. Map Location

Market Street Power Plant, New Orleans

The "Raven Rock" hideout, where the human resistance led by Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman) is stationed, was filmed inside this historic, derelict power plant. Its industrial, cavernous interior provided the gritty atmosphere for the human underground. Map Location
