Orlando

Directed by Sally Potter and based on the 1928 novel by Virginia Woolf, Orlando (1992) is a visually breathtaking journey through time and gender. Tilda Swinton stars as the titular character, an English nobleman who is commanded by Queen Elizabeth I to "not fade, not wither, not grow old." Orlando miraculously lives for four centuries, waking up one morning as a woman and experiencing the changing social, political, and romantic landscapes of England from the Elizabethan era to the early 1990s.

The film is a landmark of queer and feminist cinema, renowned for its sumptuous costume design, its fourth-wall-breaking performances, and its poetic exploration of identity.

Locations

The production was an ambitious international undertaking, moving from the historic estates of England to the frozen landscapes of Russia and the deserts of Central Asia.

Hatfield House, Hertfordshire

The stunning Hatfield House served as Orlando’s ancestral home across the centuries. Queen Elizabeth I (played by Quentin Crisp) is seen arriving here in the opening act. The house's Long Gallery and Great Hall provided the perfect authentic Elizabethan backdrop for the beginning of Orlando’s long life. Map Location

St. Petersburg, Russia

To recreate the "Great Frost" of 1604, where London’s River Thames froze over, the production moved to St. Petersburg. The frozen waters of the Neva River and the city's historic embankments stood in for a frozen London, where Orlando falls in love with the Russian Princess Sasha. Map Location

Khiva, Uzbekistan

The sequences depicting Orlando’s time as an Ambassador in "Constantinople" were actually filmed in the ancient silk-road city of Khiva. The stunning Islamic architecture, turquoise tiles, and desert surroundings of the Itchan Kala (the inner fortress) provided a brilliant, sun-drenched contrast to the damp English climate. Hampton Court Palace, London

Several scenes featuring the English Court in later centuries utilized the grounds and gardens of Hampton Court Palace. The manicured hedges and formal layouts were used during the 18th-century sequences when Orlando navigates the witty, restrictive world of the Enlightenment. Map Location

The Maze (Hatfield House), Hertfordshire

The famous scene where Orlando runs through a labyrinthine garden, transitioning from the 18th century into the Victorian era, was filmed in the gardens of Hatfield House. The physical act of running through the hedges serves as a visual metaphor for the passage of time and Orlando's internal transformation. Map Location

Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

Additional interior shots requiring grand, high-ceilinged opulence for the later centuries were filmed at Blenheim Palace. The baroque architecture helped represent the increasing wealth and institutional power of the British Empire as Orlando’s story moves toward the modern age. Map Location
