Oppenheimer

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer (2023) is an epic biographical thriller that chronicles the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy delivers a haunting, career-defining performance as the "father of the atomic bomb," focusing on his pivotal role in the Manhattan Project during World War II and the subsequent security hearing in 1954 that examined his loyalty to the United States.

The film is a technical marvel, shot entirely on large-format IMAX and 65mm film, and is notable for its use of practical effects to recreate the Trinity test, eschewing CGI for a visceral, grounded experience. It explores themes of scientific ambition, political betrayal, and the moral weight of world-altering discovery.

Locations

Nolan sought maximum authenticity for the production, filming at the actual historic sites where the Manhattan Project took place and utilizing various university campuses to stand in for 1930s academia.

Los Alamos, New Mexico

The production filmed extensively in the actual town of Los Alamos. While a 1940s-era "Base Camp" set was built in nearby Belen, the production was granted access to the real Fuller Lodge and the United Church, as well as the actual house where Oppenheimer and his family lived during the project. Ghost Ranch, Abiquiú, New Mexico

The sweeping desert vistas where Oppenheimer and General Groves (Matt Damon) discuss the isolation of the laboratory were filmed at Ghost Ranch. This location provided the dramatic, rugged landscape that Oppenheimer famously loved and suggested as the perfect site for the secret city. Map Location

University of California, Berkeley

To capture Oppenheimer's pre-war academic life, the production filmed on the UC Berkeley campus. Notable locations include the LeConte Hall physics building and the exterior of the Faculty Club. The campus's neoclassical architecture helped recreate the intellectual atmosphere of the 1930s. Map Location

Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey

The scenes featuring Oppenheimer’s post-war life and his interactions with Albert Einstein were filmed at the real Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton. Filming in the actual locations where these historical figures walked added a layer of profound realism to the film's quieter, more reflective moments. Map Location

UCLA, Los Angeles

Certain interior university scenes and corridors were filmed at UCLA, particularly within Kerckhoff Hall. The building's Gothic Revival architecture served as a stand-in for various Ivy League interiors and meeting rooms throughout the film's non-linear timeline. Map Location

Trinity Site (Belen, New Mexico)

While the real Trinity site is a restricted area within the White Sands Missile Range, the production built a meticulous full-scale replica of the "Gadget" and the firing tower in the desert plains of Belen. This allowed the crew to execute the massive practical explosion that simulated the first nuclear detonation. Map Location
