Octopussy

Directed by John Glen, Octopussy (1983) is the thirteenth entry in the James Bond series and the sixth to star Roger Moore. The plot begins with the death of Agent 009 in East Berlin and leads Bond to a jewelry-smuggling ring operated by the wealthy Afghan Prince Kamal Khan (Louis Jourdan) and the mysterious Octopussy (Maud Adams). However, Bond soon discovers a more sinister plot: a renegade Soviet General, Orlov, intends to use Octopussy's circus tour to detonate a nuclear weapon at a U.S. Air Force base in West Germany.

The film is famous for its lush Indian locations, the nail-biting train chase sequences, and the Acrostar Jet sequence in the opening pre-credits teaser.

Locations

Octopussy is renowned for its extensive and beautiful location filming, particularly in Udaipur, India, which gave the film a unique and exotic visual identity.

Udaipur, India

Often referred to as the "Venice of the East," Udaipur serves as the primary setting for the second act. The city's white marble palaces and intricate lakes are central to the film's aesthetic. The famous "auto-rickshaw chase" was filmed through the narrow, bustling streets of the city center. Map Location

Lake Palace Hotel (Octopussy’s Lair), Udaipur

The floating palace where Octopussy resides is the Taj Lake Palace. Situated in the middle of Lake Pichola, this stunning marble hotel was used for both exterior and interior shots of Octopussy's female-led island stronghold. Map Location

Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel, Udaipur

Kamal Khan's dinner party and the poolside scenes where Bond relaxes were filmed at the Shiv Niwas Palace. At the time of filming, the cast and crew actually stayed at this hotel, which is part of the City Palace complex. Map Location

Monsoon Palace (Sajjan Garh), Udaipur

Kamal Khan’s hilltop fortress is the Sajjan Garh Palace, also known as the Monsoon Palace. Perched high above the city, it provided the backdrop for the dramatic hunt sequence and the film’s final assault involving Octopussy’s circus troupe. Map Location

Nene Valley Railway, Peterborough, UK

The intense action sequences involving the circus train—where Bond fights Gobinda on the roof—were filmed on the Nene Valley Railway in England. This heritage railway was also used as a stand-in for the border crossing between East and West Germany. Map Location

RAF Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, UK

The climactic scenes where Bond disguises himself as a clown to disarm the nuclear bomb at the "US Air Force Base in Feldstadt" were filmed at the real RAF Upper Heyford. The base provided the hangars and runways needed for the high-stakes finale. Map Location

Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire, UK

As with most Bond films, the elaborate interior sets—including the interior of the circus tent and the hi-tech Soviet war room—were constructed at the legendary Pinewood Studios. Map Location
