Oliver!

Directed by Carol Reed, Oliver! (1968) is the grand cinematic adaptation of Lionel Bart's stage musical, itself based on Charles Dickens' classic novel Oliver Twist. The film stars Mark Lester as the titular orphan who dares to ask for more, leading him from a bleak workhouse to the vibrant, dangerous streets of Victorian London. Along the way, he is befriended by the Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) and taken in by the master pickpocket Fagin (Ron Moody).

The film was a massive critical and commercial success, winning six Academy Awards including Best Picture. It is renowned for its iconic musical numbers like "Food, Glorious Food," "Consider Yourself," and "As Long as He Needs Me," as well as its massive, immersive sets.

Locations

Despite the convincing portrayal of Victorian London, Oliver! was filmed almost entirely on the backlots and soundstages of Shepperton Studios. The production featured some of the most elaborate and expensive sets ever built in the UK at that time.

Shepperton Studios, Surrey

The vast majority of the movie was filmed at Shepperton Studios. The production famously utilized the massive backlot to build "Bloomsbury Square" for the "Who Will Buy?" sequence and the sprawling, multi-level slum sets for Fagin’s den and the London Bridge finale. The sets were so large they occupied several soundstages and a significant portion of the outdoor studio space. Map Location

Bloomsbury Square Set

The breathtaking "Who Will Buy?" sequence, featuring hundreds of dancers and singers in a sun-drenched London square, was a masterpiece of set design. It was built from scratch at Shepperton to allow for the precise camera movements and lighting required for the "morning glow" effect that Carol Reed envisioned. Map Location

Chertsey, Surrey

While the workhouse interiors were studio-built, some of the surrounding rural landscapes seen during Oliver's initial journey to London were filmed in the countryside near Chertsey. These locations provided a brief glimpse of the natural world before Oliver is swallowed by the industrial gloom of the city. Map Location
