Appearance
Outbreak
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, Outbreak (1995) is a high-stakes medical disaster thriller that feels eerily plausible. The film stars Dustin Hoffman as Colonel Sam Daniels, a USAMRIID virologist who discovers a deadly, Ebola-like virus brought into the United States by a smuggled monkey. As the virus mutates and begins spreading through the air in the small town of Cedar Creek, California, Daniels must race against time to find the host and create a cure, all while battling a military conspiracy led by General McClintock (Donald Sutherland), who is prepared to "contain" the virus by incinerating the town.
The film is remembered for its intense pacing, its star-studded cast including Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman, and its terrifyingly effective visualization of how easily a pathogen can spread through a community.
Locations
While the story travels from the jungles of Zaire to the halls of power in Washington D.C., the majority of the film was shot in Northern California and various locations around Los Angeles.
Cedar Creek (Ferndale), California
The picturesque town of Cedar Creek, which becomes the epicenter of the American outbreak, is actually the Victorian village of Ferndale in Humboldt County. The production took over the town for several weeks, using its Main Street and historic storefronts for the quarantine and military occupation sequences. Map Location
USAMRIID Headquarters (Fort Detrick), Maryland
While the exterior shots represent the real Fort Detrick, many of the laboratory and high-containment "Level 4" interiors were filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank. The production built elaborate, pressurized lab sets to simulate the high-tech environment where the scientists handle the deadly "Motaba" virus. Map Location
The San Pedro Waterfront, Los Angeles
The scenes involving the Korean freighter Tai Hang, which carries the infected monkey into the United States, were filmed at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. The industrial docks and shipping containers provided the gritty, realistic backdrop for the virus's arrival on American soil. Map Location
The Jungle Camp (Kaua'i), Hawaii
The opening sequence set in the 1967 Zaire mercenary camp was filmed on the island of Kaua'i. The lush, tropical valleys of Hawaii have long served as a cinematic stand-in for the African interior, providing the dense foliage required for the virus's origins. Map Location
Dugway Proving Ground (Simulated), California
The military staging areas and the dramatic final standoff involving the fuel-air bomb were filmed in the arid landscapes of the Antelope Valley and around the Ventura County hills. These locations allowed for the large-scale movement of military hardware and helicopters seen in the film's climax. Map Location
