The Omen

Directed by Richard Donner, The Omen (1976) is a cornerstone of supernatural horror that explores the chilling arrival of the Antichrist. Gregory Peck stars as Robert Thorn, an American diplomat who secretly adopts an orphaned baby, Damien, after his own child dies at birth in a Roman hospital. As Damien grows, a series of gruesome and mysterious deaths occur around the family, leading Thorn to the terrifying realization that his son is the literal son of Satan.

The film is famous for its creative and shocking death sequences, Jerry Goldsmith’s Academy Award-winning "Ave Satani" score, and its brooding, atmospheric cinematography. It remains one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed horror films of the 1970s, spawning several sequels and a remake.

Locations

The production utilized a variety of grand and historic locations across England and Italy to create a sense of gothic dread and high-stakes political importance.

All Saints' Church, Fulham, London

The terrifying scene where Father Brennan (Patrick Troughton) is impaled by a lightning rod falling from a church spire was filmed at All Saints' Church in Fulham. The church’s proximity to the River Thames and its historic stone architecture provided a dramatic backdrop for one of the film's most iconic and violent deaths. Map Location

Pyrford Court, Surrey

The Thorns' sprawling English country estate, where the infamous "birthday party" and the nanny’s suicide take place, was filmed at Pyrford Court. The grand Edwardian mansion and its sprawling gardens were essential in establishing the Thorns' wealth and the isolation that allowed the supernatural events to unfold unnoticed by the public. Windsor Great Park (The Safari Park), Berkshire

The unsettling sequence where animals at a safari park react with primal terror to Damien’s presence was filmed at Windsor Great Park. Specifically, the scene featuring the baboons attacking the Thorns' car remains a standout moment of psychological horror, suggesting that nature itself recognizes Damien's true identity. The American Embassy (Grosvenor Square), London

Representing Robert Thorn’s professional life, exterior shots were filmed around Grosvenor Square, the historical home of the American Embassy in London. The location grounded the film’s supernatural plot in the real-world corridors of political power and international diplomacy. Map Location

Rome and Cerveteri, Italy

The film's opening hospital sequence and the later scenes where Thorn investigates Damien's origins were filmed on location in Rome. The investigation leads Thorn and the photographer Keith Jennings (David Warner) to the Cemetery of Sant'Abbondio in Cerveteri, where they discover the true nature of Damien's birth mother. Shepperton Studios, Surrey

While the film utilized many real locations, the intricate and controlled interiors—including the various offices and the tense climactic scenes within the Thorn house—were constructed on soundstages at Shepperton Studios. The studio allowed for the precise coordination of the film's complex practical effects.
