The Omen

Directed by John Moore, The Omen (2006) is a stylized remake of the 1976 horror classic, famously released on June 6, 2006 (06/06/06). The film stars Liev Schreiber as Robert Thorn and Julia Stiles as Katherine Thorn. Following the death of their newborn in a Roman hospital, Robert is persuaded to switch the child with an orphan named Damien. As Robert's political career as an Ambassador flourishes in London, a series of disturbing and violent events suggest that his son is the prophesied Antichrist.

The 2006 version retains the iconic set pieces of the original—such as the nanny's public suicide and the dramatic "lightning rod" death—while updating the visual aesthetic with modern cinematography and a more global sense of impending apocalypse.

Locations

The production utilized the historic architecture of Prague and the surrounding Czech countryside to stand in for London and various Italian locations, taking advantage of the city's gothic and atmospheric landscapes.

Prague, Czech Republic (London & Rome stand-in)

The vast majority of the film was shot in and around Prague. The city's versatile architecture allowed it to double for both London and Rome. The grand interiors of the "American Embassy" and the Thorns' prestigious surroundings were filmed in various historic palaces and government buildings throughout the Czech capital. Map Location

Troja Château (The Thorn Estate), Prague

The Thorns' sprawling residence, where Damien's birthday party is held and where the nanny (Mia Farrow) begins her sinister influence, was filmed at the Troja Château (Trojský zámek). This 17th-century Baroque palace provided the necessary opulence and architectural scale to emphasize the importance of the Thorn family. Map Location

Vyšehrad Fortress, Prague

The dramatic scene where Father Brennan (Pete Postlethwaite) is pursued by a storm and eventually impaled was filmed in the area of the Vyšehrad Fortress. The historic walls and the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul provided a dark, religious backdrop for the character's violent end. Map Location

Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape

The sequence where Robert Thorn and the photographer Keith Jennings (David Thewlis) travel to find the origins of the Antichrist utilized the striking landscapes of Southern Moravia. The Lednice–Valtice area, known for its artificial ruins and sprawling parks, served as the backdrop for the investigation into the mysterious birth. Map Location

Matera, Italy

For the film's opening sequences depicting the arrival of the Antichrist and the biblical portents, the production filmed on location in Matera. The ancient, cave-like structures and stone streets of the Sassi di Matera provided a timeless, apocalyptic feel to the film's prologue. Map Location

Barrandov Studios, Prague

Extensive set work was completed at the famous Barrandov Studios. The production utilized the studio's massive soundstages to build the controlled interiors of the hospital in Rome and the more complex domestic sets, allowing for the precise execution of the film's gruesome practical effects.
