The Other Boleyn Girl
Directed by Justin Chadwick and based on the best-selling novel by Philippa Gregory, The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) is a lavish historical drama exploring the fierce competition between sisters Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson) for the affections of King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). As the Boleyn family seeks to increase their political influence, the two sisters find themselves pawns in a dangerous game of courtly intrigue that eventually leads to the seismic shift of the English Reformation.
The film is noted for its opulent costume design and for providing a different perspective on the well-known tragedy of Anne Boleyn by focusing on the relationship with her lesser-known sister.
Locations
The production utilized a wide array of historic English estates and cathedrals to recreate the Tudor court, choosing locations that retained their authentic 16th-century atmosphere.
Knole House, Sevenoaks, Kent
Knole House served as one of the primary locations for the film, standing in for the exterior and various courtyards of the Palace of Whitehall. Its sprawling Tudor facades and stone-paved courts perfectly captured the scale of the King's primary residence. Map Location
Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire
The interior of Ely Cathedral was used to represent the grand halls of Whitehall and the setting for many of the film’s high-stakes royal processions. The Lady Chapel, with its stunning medieval architecture, was a key filming site for scenes involving the royal court. Map Location
Penshurst Place, Kent
The historic Penshurst Place provided several interior locations, most notably its Baron’s Hall. The authentic timber-roofed hall and grand staterooms were used to depict the Boleyn family home and the more intimate areas of the royal palace. Map Location
Dover Castle, Kent
The imposing Dover Castle was utilized to film sequences depicting the Tower of London. Its heavy stone walls and dark corridors provided the somber and threatening atmosphere required for the film's final act and the imprisonment of Anne and George Boleyn. Map Location
Haddon Hall, Derbyshire
Haddon Hall provided the setting for many of the rural and domestic scenes. Its well-preserved Tudor rooms and gardens were used to represent the Boleyn family’s country estate, Hever Castle, and various other manor houses throughout the story. Map Location
Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire
The cloisters of Lacock Abbey were used for scenes of characters walking and conspiring within the palace grounds. The Abbey’s unique architectural blend of medieval and Tudor elements made it a frequent choice for the production’s atmospheric transitions. Map Location
