Valmont

Directed by Miloš Forman, Valmont (1989) is a lavish adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 epistolary novel Les Liaisons dangereuses. Coming just one year after Stephen Frears' Dangerous Liaisons, Forman's version offers a brighter, more outdoorsy, and slightly more satirical take on the tale of sexual conquest and aristocratic boredom. Colin Firth stars as the Vicomte de Valmont, a libertine who enters into a malicious wager with the Marquise de Merteuil (Annette Bening) to seduce the virtuous and married Madame de Tourvel (Meg Tilly).

The film is celebrated for its exquisite period detail, which earned it an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. Rather than the stagey, claustrophobic atmosphere of other adaptations, Valmont leans into the lush landscapes and grand châteaus of pre-revolutionary France.

Locations

The production was filmed entirely on location in France, utilizing several of the country's most spectacular historic estates and monuments to capture the decadence of the 18th-century French nobility.

Château de la Motte-Tilly, Aube

The Château de la Motte-Tilly served as the primary residence of Madame de Rosemonde, where much of the film's central drama and seduction takes place. This 18th-century manor, surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens and a sprawling park, provided the elegant and light-filled backdrop that Miloš Forman desired to contrast with the dark nature of the characters' games. Palais Royal, Paris

The bustling social scenes of 18th-century Paris were filmed at the Palais Royal. The distinctive colonnades and the central garden area were used to depict the public promenades where the nobility would gather to see and be seen, and where Valmont often stalks his prey. Map Location

Château de Meudon (The Orangerie), Hauts-de-Seine

The remnants of the Château de Meudon, particularly the impressive Orangerie and the vast terraces overlooking the Seine valley, were used for various outdoor festivities and garden parties. These locations emphasized the architectural scale and the artificial "perfection" of the aristocratic lifestyle. Map Location

Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Meudon

Interiors requiring specific period-accurate decor and artwork were filmed within the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Meudon. The museum's rooms, which are housed in an old royal dependency, allowed the production to maintain an authentic 1700s aesthetic without the need for extensive studio sets. Map Location

Château de Versailles (Gardens), Versailles

While the main palace is iconic, the production focused on the more secluded and ornate areas of the Gardens of Versailles for the private encounters between Merteuil and Valmont. The labyrinths of greenery and hidden fountains served as a metaphor for the intricate traps set by the protagonists. Map Location

Abbaye de Caen (The School), Normandy

The convent school where Cécile de Volanges (Fairuza Balk) is educated before being brought into the world of Merteuil and Valmont was filmed at the Abbaye aux Hommes (the Men's Abbey) in Caen. Its austere, towering Gothic and Romanesque architecture provided a sharp contrast to the hedonistic environments of Paris. Map Location
