Van Helsing

Directed by Stephen Sommers, Van Helsing (2004) is an action-adventure homage to the classic Universal Monsters of the 1930s and 40s. Hugh Jackman stars as the legendary monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing, a man with a mysterious past who is sent by a secret Vatican organization to Transylvania. His mission: to aid the last members of the Valerious bloodline in destroying Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh).

The film famously brings together iconic figures from Gothic horror, including the Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s Monster, and Mr. Hyde. Known for its high-octane energy, elaborate CGI, and grand production design, Van Helsing captures the essence of a "creature feature" on a blockbuster scale.

Locations

The production utilized the gothic architecture and misty landscapes of the Czech Republic to stand in for 19th-century Transylvania, Paris, and Rome.

Prague, Czech Republic (Old Town)

The historic streets of Prague served as the primary backdrop for the film's European cities. The cobblestone alleys and gothic spires of the Old Town (Staré Město) were used to depict both the Parisian underworld where Van Helsing battles Mr. Hyde and the various Eastern European villages he traverses. St. Nicholas Church, Prague

The interior of the Vatican’s secret armory and the scenes involving the Holy Order’s headquarters were filmed inside the St. Nicholas Church in the Mala Strana district. Its stunning Baroque architecture provided the necessary weight and antiquity for the scenes where Van Helsing receives his specialized weaponry. Map Location

Kunratice, Czech Republic (Transylvanian Village)

For the fictional village of Vaseria, the production built a massive, detailed set in the Kunratice area. This village, where Van Helsing first meets Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) and battles Dracula’s brides during a spectacular aerial attack, was designed to look like a lived-in, paranoid community nestled in the mountains. Pernštejn Castle, Moravia

Pernštejn Castle, often referred to as the "Marble Castle," provided the exterior and some interior elements for the Valerious family estate. Its dramatic hilltop position and well-preserved medieval features made it an ideal location for the ancestral home that the vampires constantly harass. Map Location

Charles Bridge, Prague

The iconic Charles Bridge is featured during the film's various city transitions. Its line of religious statues and dark stone gothic towers perfectly matched the film's aesthetic, serving as a moody gateway between the "civilized" world and the supernatural threats lurking in the shadows. Barrandov Studios, Prague

While many locations were real, the fantastical elements like Dracula’s Ice Castle and Frankenstein’s laboratory were constructed on the massive soundstages of Barrandov Studios. These sets allowed the production to integrate complex practical stunts with the film's groundbreaking digital visual effects. Map Location
