Vanishing Point

Directed by Richard C. Sarafian, Vanishing Point (1971) is the ultimate existential road movie and a landmark of 1970s counterculture cinema. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a former racing driver and decorated war hero who bets he can deliver a white 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T from Denver to San Francisco in less than 15 hours. As he streaks across the American West, fueled by amphetamines and a primal need for speed, he becomes a folk hero to the disenfranchised, guided by the soulful radio broadcasts of a blind DJ named Super Soul (Cleavon Little).

The film is celebrated for its high-octane stunt driving, its minimalist dialogue, and its deep-seated themes of freedom and individual defiance against an encroaching police state. It remains a cult classic, famously influencing filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright.

Locations

The production followed the actual route across the Western United States, capturing the vast, lonely stretches of highway and the dusty desert towns of Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California.

Denver, Colorado (The Starting Line)

The journey begins in the early morning streets of Denver. The opening sequences feature the industrial areas and warehouses where Kowalski picks up the Challenger. The contrast between the cold, urban start and the open desert ahead sets the lonely tone for his high-speed odyssey. Map Location

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Several of the early high-speed pursuit scenes were filmed along Interstate 70 near Glenwood Springs. The dramatic canyon walls and the winding road through the Rockies provided a visually stunning backdrop for Kowalski's first brushes with the highway patrol. Map Location

Cisco, Utah (The Ghost Town)

Kowalski’s encounter with an old prospector and his journey through the desert utilized the near-ghost town of Cisco, Utah. The dilapidated buildings and the vast, arid landscape of the Colorado Plateau emphasize Kowalski’s isolation as he moves further away from civilization. Map Location

Goldfield, Nevada (KOW Radio Station)

The fictional town where Super Soul broadcasts his pirate radio show was filmed in Goldfield, Nevada. The historic Goldfield Hotel and the dusty main street were used to depict the small-town atmosphere where the local police attempt to track down and stop the "last American hero." Map Location

Tonopah, Nevada

The production utilized the outskirts of Tonopah for the various high-speed "cat and mouse" games played between the Challenger and the police cruisers. The long, flat stretches of Nevada highway allowed the stunt drivers to push the Dodge Challenger to its limits for the camera. Map Location

Genevra, California (The Finish Line)

The film’s shocking and explosive climax, involving a massive police roadblock and two bulldozers, was filmed in the small community of Genevra, California (near Cisco Grove). The final confrontation on the highway remains one of the most discussed and analyzed endings in cinema history. Map Location
