Volcano

Directed by Mick Jackson, Volcano (1997) is a high-concept disaster film that imagines a literal geological nightmare: the birth of a volcano in the heart of Los Angeles. Tommy Lee Jones stars as Mike Roark, the head of the city's Office of Emergency Management, who must lead a desperate defense against a river of lava flowing down Wilshire Boulevard. Anne Heche co-stars as Dr. Amy Barnes, a seismologist who helps Roark understand the subterranean threat emerging from the La Brea Tar Pits.

The film is remembered for its localized destruction of famous L.A. landmarks, its fast-paced action, and the practical effects used to simulate flowing lava. It remains a cult favorite of the 90s disaster movie era, capturing a city forced to work together against an unstoppable natural force.

Locations

The production is a love letter to Los Angeles, heavily featuring the Mid-Wilshire district. While many scenes used a massive 80% scale replica of Wilshire Boulevard built in San Bernardino, several key locations are real L.A. staples.

La Brea Tar Pits, Los Angeles

The disaster begins at the world-famous La Brea Tar Pits on Wilshire Boulevard. In the film, the pits become the epicenter of the volcanic activity, with lava first erupting through the asphalt. The real museum and surrounding Hancock Park are featured in establishing shots that set the stage for the chaos. Map Location

Wilshire Boulevard & Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles

The intersection of Wilshire and Fairfax serves as the primary "battleground" where the city’s emergency services attempt to divert the lava flow using concrete barriers. The historic May Company Building (now the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures) is a prominent landmark seen during the intense firefighting sequences. Map Location

MacArthur Park, Los Angeles

The film’s climax involves a plan to tunnel the lava into the city’s drainage system and eventually out to the ocean. MacArthur Park and its lake are featured during these logistical maneuvers as the heat and ash begin to blanket the more eastern parts of the city. Map Location

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles

The hospital scenes, where the injured are treated and where Roark’s daughter (Gaby Hoffmann) is taken, were filmed around the area of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The production utilized the surrounding streets to depict the gridlock and medical urgency caused by the erupting volcano. Map Location

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

Located right next to the Tar Pits, LACMA is seen throughout the first half of the film. The museum's proximity to the rising lava creates a sense of high-stakes cultural loss, mirroring the real-world geography of the Miracle Mile district. Map Location

San Bernardino International Airport (The Backlot)

Because the production could not actually destroy Wilshire Boulevard, a massive, multi-block replica of the street was constructed at the San Bernardino International Airport (formerly Norton Air Force Base). This 450-foot-long set allowed the crew to use actual fire and thousands of gallons of "lava" (a methylcellulose mixture) safely. Map Location
