Appearance
The Waterboy
Directed by Frank Coraci and written by Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler, The Waterboy (1998) is a classic sports comedy that introduced the world to Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler). Bobby is a socially awkward, stuttering water boy for a high-level college football team who is constantly bullied by the players and staff. Under the overprotective eye of his mother, Mama Boucher (Kathy Bates), Bobby lives a sheltered life in the Louisiana bayou.
After being fired from his long-time job, Bobby finds a new home with the struggling South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs. When Coach Klein (Henry Winkler) discovers that Bobby has a hidden talent for tackling—fueled by years of suppressed "visualized" anger—Bobby becomes the team's secret weapon. The film follows Bobby’s hilarious journey from outcast to gridiron hero, leading his team toward the Bourbon Bowl while trying to keep his football career a secret from his mama.
Location(s)
While the film is set in the heart of Louisiana, the majority of the production actually took place in Central Florida, utilizing local stadiums and the lush, moss-draped scenery of the region to stand in for the bayou.
Spec Martin Stadium, DeLand
This historic stadium served as the home field for the SCLSU Mud Dogs. Much of the film’s football action, including Bobby's first incredible tackle and the team's eventual rise to fame, was captured here. Map Location
Florida Citrus Bowl, Orlando
The climactic "Bourbon Bowl" finale was filmed at the Camping World Stadium (formerly the Citrus Bowl). The production filled the stands with thousands of local extras to create the high-stakes atmosphere of a major championship game. Map Location
Cassadaga, Florida
The exterior of Mama Boucher’s swamp-side home was filmed in the wooded, mossy areas around Cassadaga and Orange City. These locations provided the atmospheric, rural "bayou" feel essential to Bobby’s character background. Map Location
FAQ
Where did Bobby Boucher’s voice come from?
Sandler based Bobby’s high-pitched, stuttering delivery on a character he performed in a 1994 Saturday Night Live skit called "The Denise Show," where he played a heartbroken guy named Brian. He tweaked the voice to give Bobby that "innocent, sheltered Louisianan" quality.
Was Kathy Bates really in this?
Yes! In what many consider a brilliant casting move, Academy Award winner Kathy Bates played Mama Boucher. She has stated in interviews that she took the role because her niece told her how much people loved Adam Sandler, and she ended up having a blast playing the overprotective, "Vicki Vallencourt is the devil" matriarch.
Is Captain Insano a real wrestler?
Captain Insano was played by The Big Show (Paul Wight), a legendary professional wrestler. At the time of filming, he was wrestling for WCW under the name "The Giant."
Did Adam Sandler do his own stunts?
While Sandler did a fair amount of the running and "meditating," the more explosive, high-impact tackles were performed by professional stunt doubles. The hits in the movie were intentionally designed to look more violent than a standard football game to emphasize Bobby’s "Captain Insano" levels of repressed rage.
Who is the "You Can Do It!" guy?
That is Rob Schneider. His cameo as the "Townie" started a long-running tradition where he and Sandler appear in each other’s films to deliver that specific catchphrase.
