Appearance
Wait Until Dark
Directed by Terence Young, Wait Until Dark (1967) is a masterclass in suspense and tension. Audrey Hepburn stars as Susy Hendrix, a woman recently blinded in an accident who becomes the target of three ruthless criminals. The men are searching for a heroin-filled doll that Susy’s husband unknowingly brought into their apartment. As the villains manipulate her with elaborate ruses, Susy realizes the danger she is in and must use her wits—and her familiarity with the darkness—to level the playing field.
The film's climax is widely considered one of the most terrifying sequences in cinema history, and Hepburn received an Academy Award nomination for her performance.
Locations
The film is famously claustrophobic, with almost the entire story taking place inside a basement apartment. While the interiors were controlled sets, the exterior shots were filmed on location in New York City.
4 St. Luke’s Place, Greenwich Village
The exterior of the apartment building where Susy and Sam live is located at 4 St. Luke’s Place in Manhattan. This quiet, tree-lined street in the West Village remains one of the most beautiful blocks in the city. The production used the basement-level entrance for Susy's apartment, which looks remarkably similar today to how it appeared in 1967. Map Location
Warner Bros. Studios, Burbank
While the exterior is in New York, the interior of Susy's apartment—the main setting of the film—was a meticulously designed set built at Warner Bros. Studios in California. The set was designed to allow for the complex "cat-and-mouse" choreography and the pivotal darkness of the final showdown. Map Location
JFK International Airport, New York
The opening sequence, where the doll is passed from a courier to Susy's husband Sam (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.), was filmed at John F. Kennedy International Airport (then known as Idlewild). The busy international terminal provided a grounded, realistic start to the thriller. Map Location
Greenwich Village Streets
Several shots of Susy navigating the streets of New York, including her walk home and the moments when the criminals are surveilling her, were filmed on the real streets of Greenwich Village. These locations helped establish Susy's vulnerability and the urban atmosphere of 1960s Manhattan. Map Location
