Wagon Master

Directed by the legendary John Ford, Wagon Master (1950) is often cited by the director himself as one of his favorite works. The film follows two young horse traders, Travis Blue (Ben Johnson) and Sandy (Harry Carey Jr.), who are hired to lead a group of Mormon settlers across the harsh Utah wilderness to the San Juan River valley. Along the way, they encounter a stranded medicine show and a group of dangerous outlaws, the Clegg family.

The film is a lyrical and visually stunning celebration of the pioneer spirit, noted for its lack of traditional Hollywood melodrama and its focus on the rhythms of life on the trail. It later served as the inspiration for the long-running television series Wagon Train.

Locations

The production was filmed on location in Utah, utilizing the spectacular landscapes that became synonymous with John Ford’s Westerns.

Moab, Utah

The majority of the film was shot in and around Moab. The rugged terrain, sandstone arches, and wide-open valleys provided the authentic, untamed backdrop required for the Mormon trek. The production utilized the unique topography of the area to simulate the long, arduous journey of the wagon train. Map Location

Professor Valley, Utah

Many of the trail sequences were filmed in Professor Valley, located about 20 miles northeast of Moab. The towering red rock monoliths, such as the Fisher Towers, are visible in the background of several scenes as the wagons move across the desert floor. Map Location

Near Colorado River in Utah

The crossing of the San Juan River was actually filmed using the Colorado River near Moab. The production found a suitable stretch of the river to depict the dangerous and physically demanding task of moving heavy wagons and livestock across deep water.

Spanish Valley, Utah

The scenes involving the wagon train's camp and the interactions between the settlers and the Indians were largely filmed in Spanish Valley. This location offered the broad, flat vistas needed to show the entire scope of the caravan at rest. Map Location

Arches National Park, Utah

Specific shots featuring dramatic rock formations were captured within what is now Arches National Park. The natural beauty of the park added a sense of awe and scale to the settlers' journey toward their "Promised Land." Map Location
