Directed by Costa-Gavras and written by Jorge Semprún and Costa-Gavras, Z (1969) is a high-speed political thriller and a landmark of world cinema. Based on the 1966 novel by Vassilis Vassilikos, the film presents a thinly fictionalized account of the 1963 assassination of Greek democratic politician Grigoris Lambrakis.
The story begins with the public murder of a prominent deputy (Yves Montand) during a peace rally. While the authorities attempt to dismiss the incident as a tragic traffic accident, a tenacious examining magistrate (Jean-Louis Trintignant) uncovers a shocking web of corruption involving the police and the military. The title "Z" refers to a popular Greek protest slogan meaning "He Lives." The film famously won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and remains one of the most influential political films ever made.
Location(s)
Although the film is set in a fictionalized version of Thessaloniki, Greece, it was filmed almost entirely in Algeria. At the time of production, Greece was under the rule of a military junta that had banned both the novel and the director.
