Zathura: A Space Adventure
Directed by Jon Favreau and based on the children's book by Chris Van Allsburg — the author of Jumanji — Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005) follows two quarrelsome brothers, Walter and Danny Budwing, who discover a mysterious board game in their basement. When they begin to play, the game launches their house into deep space, forcing the brothers, their older sister, and a stranded astronaut to survive increasingly dangerous challenges in order to make it home.
Favreau deliberately favored practical effects over CGI, working with Stan Winston's studio to build real suits and sets wherever possible. The production was shot primarily in and around Los Angeles in the summer of 2004.
Location(s)
Zathura was filmed at a combination of a real residential location in South Pasadena and purpose-built studio sets at Sony Pictures in Culver City, which handled the complex interiors and zero-gravity sequences.
216 Oaklawn Avenue, South Pasadena, California
The exterior of the Budwing family house — the Craftsman-style home that gets hurled into outer space — is a real residence at 216 Oaklawn Avenue, just south of Columbia Street in South Pasadena. The same house later appeared in the 2007 thriller Disturbia. Visitors are reminded this is a private home and residents' privacy should be respected. Map Location
Sony Pictures Studios, Stage 30, Culver City, California
The entire interior of the Budwing house was reconstructed on Stage 30 at Sony Pictures Studios, 10202 W. Washington Boulevard in Culver City. This is where the film's most technically demanding sequences were shot, including scenes where the set was mounted on a gimbal and tilted up to 40 degrees to simulate gravitational chaos. The studio also designed several of the alien and robot suits in-house. Map Location
