Appearance
Gallipoli
Directed by Peter Weir, Gallipoli (1981) is a seminal piece of Australian cinema that tells the story of two young sprinters, Archy (Mark Lee) and Frank (Mel Gibson), who enlist in the Australian Army during World War I. The film follows their journey from the rugged outback of Western Australia to the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign in Turkey. It is a powerful exploration of friendship, the loss of innocence, and the forging of the "Anzac spirit."
The film is renowned for its haunting final shot and its iconic use of Jean-Michel Jarre’s Oxygène and Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor.
Locations
While the film is set in Western Australia, Cairo, and Turkey, the production was filmed almost entirely in South Australia, utilizing its diverse landscapes to stand in for various international locales.
Coffin Bay Peninsula, South Australia
The dramatic cliffs and beaches of Coffin Bay served as the location for the Gallipoli landing and the trenches at Anzac Cove. The rugged coastline of the Eyre Peninsula provided a startlingly accurate double for the Turkish terrain where the actual battle took place. Map Location
Lake Torrens, South Australia
The vast, salt-crusted expanse of Lake Torrens was used to film the grueling journey across the desert in Western Australia. The shimmering heat and white horizon emphasized the physical endurance of the protagonists before they even reached the battlefield. Map Location
Beltana, South Australia
The historic town of Beltana provided the setting for the rural Australian outback and the athletics carnival where Archy and Frank first meet. Its well-preserved colonial architecture gave the film an authentic early 20th-century atmosphere. Map Location
Adelaide Station, South Australia
Adelaide Railway Station stood in for the bustling Cairo railway station. With some clever set dressing and hundreds of extras, the grand interior of the station was transformed into the chaotic hub of the Egyptian capital during the Great War. Map Location
Port Adelaide, South Australia
The docks at Port Adelaide were used for the scenes depicting the soldiers embarking on their journey to the front lines. The industrial heritage of the area helped recreate the scale of the military mobilization. Map Location
