Garden State

Written, directed by, and starring Zach Braff, Garden State (2004) is a quirky indie comedy-drama that became a generational touchstone. The story follows Andrew Largeman, a depressed television actor who returns to his hometown in New Jersey for his mother's funeral after being estranged for nine years. During his stay, he stops taking his lithium, confronts his distant father, and meets Sam (Natalie Portman), a pathological liar who helps him reconnect with his emotions.

The film is famous for its eclectic soundtrack and its stylized depiction of suburban New Jersey, capturing a specific sense of early-2000s malaise and whimsy.

Locations

The production was filmed almost entirely on location in New Jersey, staying true to the film's title and Andrew's roots.

South Orange, New Jersey

The "Largeman House," where Andrew's father (Ian Holm) lives and where much of the family tension unfolds, is located in South Orange. Many of the residential streets seen in the film, including the ones Andrew travels on his vintage sidecar motorcycle, are in this immediate area. Map Location

Cranford, New Jersey

The scene where Andrew and Sam go to the doctor's office—and where Andrew first hears the Shins' "New Slang"—was filmed at a local medical building in Cranford. The production used several small-town storefronts and streets in Cranford to establish the "anytown" New Jersey feel. Map Location

Newark Liberty International Airport

The emotional climax of the film, where Andrew decides whether to stay in New Jersey or return to Los Angeles, was filmed at Newark Liberty International Airport. Specifically, the scenes were shot in the walkways and gate areas of Terminal C. Map Location

Tenafly, New Jersey

The "Original Beef" restaurant where Mark works (and where the group gathers for late-night food) was filmed at a diner in Tenafly. The production chose this location for its classic, neon-lit Jersey diner aesthetic. Map Location

FAQ

Was the movie actually filmed in New Jersey?

Yes. Staying true to the title, Zach Braff filmed almost entirely on location in New Jersey, specifically in South Orange, Cranford, Tenafly, and Mahwah. The iconic "infinite abyss" scene (the rainy quarry) was filmed at Apple Pie Hill in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and a quarry in Rockaway.

How much of the story is autobiographical?

While not a literal memoir, Braff has stated the film was a "collection of anomalies" from his life. He wrote it while frustrated with his acting career (before Scrubs took off), dealing with his own feelings of "quarter-life crisis" and emotional numbness.

What is the significance of the "Infinite Abyss"?

The quarry scene represents the characters' attempt to scream into the void of their uncertain futures. It’s a moment of catharsis where Andrew (Large) finally lets go of his medicated numbness and feels a raw, "authentic" emotion.

Why does he wear a shirt that matches the wallpaper?

The "wallpaper shirt" was actually made from the extra fabric left over from the set's wallpaper. It visually represents Andrew’s desire to blend into the background and his lack of a distinct identity at the start of the film.

What happened to the "original" ending?

There were rumors of a darker ending, but Braff has clarified that the theatrical ending—Andrew returning to the airport to be with Sam—was always the intended heart of the movie, representing his choice to finally stop running away from his feelings.
