Gangs of New York

Directed by Martin Scorsese, Gangs of New York (2002) is a sprawling historical epic set in the mid-19th century in the Five Points district of Lower Manhattan. The story follows Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio), a young Irish immigrant who returns to the Five Points to seek revenge against William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), the anti-immigrant gang leader who killed his father.

The film is a vivid, brutal portrayal of early American urban life, culminating in the Draft Riots of 1863. It is particularly noted for Daniel Day-Lewis's transformative performance and the incredible scale of its production design.

Locations

Despite being a story deeply rooted in New York City history, the film was famously shot almost entirely in Italy at the legendary Cinecittà Studios, where a massive, multi-block recreation of 1860s Manhattan was constructed.

Cinecittà Studios, Rome

The most significant "location" for the film is the Cinecittà Studios. Production designer Dante Ferretti built a staggering one-mile stretch of mid-19th-century New York, including the Five Points intersection, the waterfront, and two full-sized sailing ships in a water tank. The set was so realistic that it reportedly left visitors—including real New York historians—speechless. Map Location

The Old Brewery, Rome (Set)

The "Old Brewery," the tenement building that served as the dark, crowded heart of the Five Points, was a massive three-story interior and exterior set built at Cinecittà. It was designed to reflect the decaying, labyrinthine conditions described in historical accounts of the period. Map Location

Odescalchi Castle, Bracciano

For some of the more palatial interiors representing the "uptown" world of New York’s wealthy elite and political figures like William "Boss" Tweed, the production utilized the grand rooms of the Odescalchi Castle outside of Rome. Its Renaissance architecture provided the necessary opulence to contrast with the squalor of the Five Points. Map Location

Silvercup Studios, New York

While the bulk of the film was shot in Italy, some minor pick-up shots and post-production work were completed at Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, New York, bringing the production back to the city it was depicting. Map Location
