Gangster No. 1

Directed by Paul McGuigan, Gangster No. 1 (2000) is a stylish and brutal British crime drama that spans thirty years of London's underworld. The film follows the rise of an unnamed protagonist (played by Paul Bettany as a young man and Malcolm McDowell as an older man) within the ranks of a gang led by the charismatic yet deadly Freddie Mays (David Thewlis). Driven by a pathological obsession with Mays, the "Gangster" orchestrates a ruthless climb to the top, only to find his victory hollow.

The film is noted for its experimental cinematography, its unflinching violence, and Bettany’s breakout performance as the cold, meticulous social climber.

Locations

The production utilized various London neighborhoods to capture both the vibrant, "swinging" 1960s and the grittier, modernized city of the late 1990s.

The Park Lane Hotel, Mayfair

The opulent ballroom and bar of the Park Lane Hotel (now the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane) served as the setting for the high-end nightclubs where Freddie Mays holds court. The Art Deco interiors provided the perfect sophisticated backdrop for Mays' "gentleman gangster" persona. Map Location

Hoxton Square, London

The exterior of the nightclub owned by the gang was filmed in and around Hoxton Square in Shoreditch. During the filming in 1999, the area was transitioning from its industrial roots into an arts hub, providing the mix of warehouse aesthetics and emerging trendy life seen in the film. Map Location

Smithfield Market, London

The historic Smithfield Market and its surrounding Victorian alleys were used for several of the film's grimmer exterior scenes. The vaulted ceilings and meat-packing district vibes added to the film's cold, visceral atmosphere during the scenes where the Gangster asserts his dominance. Map Location

33 Portland Place, Marylebone

The interior of Freddie Mays’ stylish, modern 1960s apartment was filmed inside 33 Portland Place. This grand townhouse is a popular filming location, also seen in The King's Speech, and its expansive rooms were dressed to reflect Mays' wealth and taste. Map Location

The Royal Albert Hall, London

The older Gangster (Malcolm McDowell) is seen attending an event at the Royal Albert Hall toward the end of the film. The iconic circular venue represents the peak of the social status the Gangster has achieved, though it contrasts with his internal mental collapse. Map Location
